-be treated to eerie cypress and tupelo trees and-
-scenery you won't find anywhere else on the lake.-

What's In a Name? The Bulltown Flats is a historical reference to the nearly 4-mile access ditch that was dug and used to transport people and building materials during the construction of the 19th century Santee Canal. The remains of this ditch can be still be seen when hiking the Lake Moultrie Passage of the Palmetto Trail. If you pull up popular mapping programs (e.g.: Google Maps) in satellite view, you can see this ditch. The Bulltown Flats ditch comes as close as 700 ft. from the Bulltown Flats Blueway. CLICK HERE to see this. There is also the nearby Bulltown Bay small wetland habitat.
More History on the Blueway: The nearby Santee Canal was one of the earliest canals built in the United States. It provided a direct water route between Charleston and Columbia. The canal was 22 miles long and it had two double locks and eight single locks.
